Mobile ID, the ICO, MWC LA, and More: This Week's Top Stories

This week’s roundup of Mobile ID World’s top stories delivers a varied mix of digital identity news, including some big developments in mobile ID and details about an important upcoming event for the mobile industry.

On the mobile ID front, some big news came out of the Philippines, where government officials confirmed this week that they are planning to launch a mobile national ID card in early 2022. Registering for the mobile ID will require citizens to first register for a physical PhilID card, which entails the provision of biographic information as well as biometric data:

Meanwhile, in Florida, officials recently confirmed that they’re trying to work with Apple on a mobile ID solution for the state. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has been working on its own mobile ID for some time, and plans to launch it in November of this year; but in a presentation to a Senate panel, officials indicated that they were also trying to make the solution compatible with Apple’s own mobile ID platform:

Yoti, a pioneer in the area of mobile ID, got some attention this week for quite a different reason. The company weighed in on the UK Information Commissioner’s Office’s recent report on Age Estimation Technology, finding fault in the ICO’s broad generalizations about the technology’s accuracy, and even whether it should be considered a biometric technology:
