Mikel Arteta has explained his decision to drop Alexandre Lacazette to the bench for Arsenal’s clash against Newcastle on Saturday.

Spaniard Arteta made just the one change to the team that lost 4-0 to Liverpool last weekend, with summer signing Martin Odegaard replacing the Frenchman.

Nuno Tavares has kept his place in the side ahead of Kieran Tierney despite an error-strewn display from the Portuguese left-back at Anfield.

The Gunners will hope to bounce back from last Saturday’s match with a positive against bottom club Newcastle at the Emirates.

Prior to the defeat against Liverpool, Arteta’s side had put together an eight-match unbeaten run in the league to climb up the table following their poor start to the campaign.

When quizzed on his call to bench Lacazette, Arteta told BT Sport: ‘We are going to have to start to change the team more because we have a very busy schedule coming up and rotations and chances are going to come for every player.

On Tavares remaining in the starting XI, he added: ‘We know that and when a player is trying more and more and more and doesn’t hide then for me play him again.’

Lacazette, who had occupied the No.10 role ahead of Odegaard in recent matches, is facing an uncertain future at the north London club.

His current deal is due to expire next summer, meaning he can negotiate with foreign clubs from January.

In a recent interview with Telefoot, Lacazette confirmed that his agents are beginning to look at potential moves away from the Emirates.

‘Of course, my agents are starting to look to the right and to the left,’ Lacazette told Telefoot earlier this week

‘But not until January, I really want to focus myself on something.

‘And then we will see what is on offer, if the challenges are interesting, if there are beautiful projects, how they are counting on me… so there are still many questions, I prefer to wait until January to position myself.’
