According to Automotive News Europe, the world’s oldest car brand wants to start building its next-gen electric powertrains itself. Upcoming electric platforms such as MB.EA will be designed by Mercedes, requiring powertrains produced by the brand.
According to a report, this is set to commence in 2024. Daimler’s head of development, Markus Schaefer, noted that Mercedes wants to control as much as possible – including the battery, electric motor and power electronics – much like it does with its combustion engines.
“Until now, the electric powertrains have come from external partners.” At this stage, the luxury carmaker depends on external suppliers, such as ZF to supply powertrain models for the EQC SUV, for example.
