Manchester United transfer news LIVE: Jadon Sancho and Alex Telles latest, Dayot Upamecano and Dominic Calvert-Lewin interest

Manchester United are pushing for reinforcements in the transfer market with the summer deadline less than two weeks away.

The 3-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday has hastened the urgency for new recruits with Jadon Sancho remaining the No 1 target. Borussia Dortmund have been holding out for £108m all summer but Ed Woodward is said to be confident they will drop the asking price before the deadline with personal terms already agreed with the England international. Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin is another said to be of interest although the Toffees’ value the striker, fresh from a hat-trick at the weekend, at upwards of £80m.

Left-back is another priority position to upgrade with Porto’s Alex Telles another to be linked. A five-year deal has been agreed with a fee with the Portuguese club now being haggled over. RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano is a long-term target with suggestions that interest could be revisited before the deadline. There could yet be a number of exits too with Chris Smalling still set for Roma and Jesse Lingard a surprise target for Tottenham Hotspur and former boss Jose Mourinho.

Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly have struggled to hold down a place as Maguire’s partner but both have glaring weaknesses that irritate fans and management alike.

Step up Dayot Upamecano.

The RB Leipzig centre-back is one of the quickest defenders in world football and would take the pressure off Maguire who has been criticised for his lack of pace.

Upamecano, has made 115 appearances for Leipzig and can also play right-back if required. It is believed a bid in the region of £50m would be needed to lure him to English football and The Daily Telegraph reports that United will renew their interest in the defender over the coming days.

According to the reports from French outlet L’Equipe, Manchester United could make an unexpected bid for Sporting CP midfielder Marcus Wendel before the transfer window closes.

A bid from United of around €25m for the Brazilian got rejected by Sporting in July but interest in the 23-year-old midfielder has apparently been re-ignited.

AS Monaco are also pushing to sign the midfielder who played in 28 games for Sporting in the 2019/20 Liga NOS, scoring three goals and making two assists.

Manchester United have reportedly struck up talks with Barcelona over a move for Ousmane Dembele.

United have enquired about a season-long loan deal but the LaLiga giants would prefer a permenant sale of €100million according to Record Sport.

The report goes on to state that senior Old Trafford officials, including executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, have already spoken to Barcelona about the ‘viability’ of a move.

The winger has struggled to maintain a regular place in Barcelona’s first team since arriving from Borussia Dortmund for €105 million in the summer of 2017 and he has been plagued with injuries during his time at the Camp Nou.

The 23-year-old made just nine appearances for the Spanish giants last season after a serious hamstring injury ruled him out for six months.

Which explains why United want a loan deal and Barca prefer to sell, if Dembele comes to Old Trafford there’s a risk he’ll break down before the end of the season.

German football expert Raphael Honigstein insists Dortmund do not believe Manchester United vice-executive chairman Ed Woodward will return with a package meeting their demands for Jadon Sancho.

Sancho has been United’s No. 1 target during the window but enthusiasm over the move has died down in Germany with Borussia Dortmund repeatedly saying Sancho is staying put.

Honigstein echoed those statements telling The Athletic’s Ornstein and Chapman podcast

“I’m not sure he [Sancho] will dominate the rest of the transfer window! Certainly in Germany there’s almost nothing about this story.

“People just seem to be taking Dortmund’s insistence that no transfer will happen at face value.

“They set that public deadline of the 10th of August, United haven’t even come close to putting in a bid that meets anywhere near the €120million valuation that Dortmund have put on him.

“And many, many Dortmund players have come out to say how much they enjoy the fact he will be with them next season.

“That’s not to say that things can still develop, United might find some money somewhere or Ed Woodward will win the EuroMillions and put a huge bid in.

“It doesn’t seem to be anticipated by anyone at Dortmund. At the moment, as things stand, most indications are that he will indeed stay.

“The fact that they started well, I don’t think has any impact one way or the other but it does show how exciting this Dortmund team are now with Sancho, [Erling Braut] Haaland, Gio Reyna and the new addition of Jude Bellingham just behind them.”

The more we talk about Manchester United the clearer is becomes where they need to strengthn. The latest thoughts come from former Liverpool man Jason McAteer who talked to FreeSuperTips about United’s weaknesses and believes both in central defence and up front they need further strengthening. He said:

“When it comes to the strikers, Ole Gunnar Solskjær has gone with Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood, with Odion Ighalo as a backup, so if one of those were to get a serious injury then United would be quite light in the striking department.

“I really worry for Manchester United in defence; they are all susceptible to giving away opportunities – I am not a big fan of Harry Maguire.

“He hasn’t properly settled in Manchester, I’m not sure if it comes to down not having a confident partner next to him, his partnership with Lindelof still looks a little weak, or not having a left-back who is consistently in the team each week that he can trust.

“I feel like any team coming up against them will feel like they have a chance due to their defensive frailties and their lack of a good enough central defensive midfielder. There are problems in those areas and that is where they need to strengthen the most.”

The Sun are reporting that Manchester United had Dominic Calvert-Lewin as a possible transfer target for this summer but were blown away by Everton’s valuation of the striker.

Everton slapped an £80 million price tag on Calvert-Lewin.

And that was before the 23-year-old’s hat-trick against West Brom in Saturday’s 5-2 win for Everton.

SunSport revealed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer targeted Calvert-Lewin in this summer’s window but the valuations is too high and the club have ended their interest.

More details, or rumours, are emerging about Manchester United’s pursuit of Porto’s Alex Telles.

The left-back is rumoured to cost somewhere between £18-23 million and United are trying to lower the cash amount by offering Diogo Dalot in a player plus cash deal.

But Porto have confirmed they will only accept an offer from Old Trafford officials if their £23m asking price is met in full.

Premier League fans will NOT return to stadiums on October 1 following a huge Covid-19 surge, Michael Gove has announced.

The Government revealed in August that they hoped to bring back live crowds at a limited capacity by the start of next month.

But the plans were placed under review this month after a rise in coronavirus cases.

The UK’s Covid-19 alert level has now moved to 4, meaning transmission is “high or rising exponentially”.

It blocks the Premier League’s hopes of having fans return to stadiums.

New measures will be set out by Prime Minister Boris Johnson later today.

Dele Alli has fallen out of favour at Tottenham Hotspur, according to talkSPORT, after he wasn’t featured in Jose Mourinho’s last matchday squad.

With Dele linked with a move away from the London club, Jesse Lingard is being tipped as a possible replacement for the midfielder.

A swap deal has been mooted, but United will likely listen to offers for Lingard.
