Manchester United look set to battle it out with Chelsea and Manchester City to sign England midfielder Declan Rice, with the Red Devils expected to make a move for the England star next summer.

Both Chelsea and City are reportedly monitoring the situation of the 22-year-old, who has been in impressive form for West Ham so far this season after his stellar Euro 2020 campaign with England.

According to the Guardian, West Ham are understood to be open to accepting a ‘massive’ offer for Rice if one was to come in, after the midfielder rejected two contract offers from the East London club earlier this year.

United are in need of a holding midfielder, with Fred, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic not seen as good enough to be long-term regulars at the club.

Former United striker Teddy Sheringham has urged the club to sign Rice, while drawing comparisons to former Red Devils’ Roy Keane and Michael Carrick.

‘He’s a player I see at a club like Manchester United without a doubt,’ Sheringham said.

‘I thought Declan Rice was our outstanding player at Euro 2020. I was very disappointed when he got brought off in the final, it was the wrong decision.

‘We couldn’t retain possession when it was tough against the Italians – and he was one player who did retain possession.

He added: ‘He moved like a Rolls-Royce with the ball out of a problem and then found a pass after that. It’s invaluable to be able to do that and he showed what a top player he is.

‘He’s a top player so he will be going somewhere quite soon. He’ll definitely be on Manchester United’s radar.

‘He’s in the mould of Roy Keane and Michael Carrick, who were two top, top players, which you’ve got to have in midfield for Manchester United. So he’d easily fit in there.’

United travel to London to face Rice’s current club West Ham in the Premier League on Sunday, with all eyes set to be on the performance of the young star.
