Manchester United confident they’ve won race for £80m Man City target Harry Maguire

Manchester United believe they will win the race to sign Leicester City centre-half Harry Maguire, with Manchester City buckling at the Foxes’ asking price.

While Maguire is thought to prefer a move to the Etihad to link up with Pep Guardiola’s title-winning outfit, City only value the England international at around £50million.

Leicester, however, are unwilling to sell Maguire on the cheap and want in excess of £80m.

City’s reluctance to cough up the cash has left the door open to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, with United chiefs willing to lodge a bid far closer to Leicester’s asking price.

Once their bid is accepted, United’s negotiators are then confident they can lure the 26-year-old to Old Trafford, according to the Daily Mail.

Both Manchester clubs are in the market for centre-backs this summer.

City have lost long-time club captain Vincent Kompany, who has returned to his native Belgium, while Nicolas Otamendi is set to leave, with Atletico Madrid the heavy favourites to sign the Argentine.

Solskjaer, meanwhile, remains unconvinced by his defensive options, just as his predecessor Jose Mourinho was.

He is keen to add a British core to his squad following the signing of Swansea’s Daniel James for £17m and Maguire fits the bill.
