Manchester United are ‘increasingly confident’ of completing a club record £135million move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez this summer.

The Spaniard has been on the club’s radar since Louis van Gaal was at the helm at Old Trafford but United have twice been rebuffed in an effort to sign the midfielder.

Niguez, 25, signed an astonishing nine-year deal with Atletico in 2017 but it includes a £135m buy-out clause and the Daily Star claim United are ready to trigger it.

United watched Niguez in action against Liverpool at Anfield early this month and were impressed with the 25-year-old’s performance as the Champions League holders were knocked out by Diego Simeone’s side.

Niguez would arrive as Paul Pogba’s replacement and the deal is depedent on United offloading the Frenchman this summer.

Real Madrid and Juventus are both keen on the World Cup winner but United want around £120m for his services.

Solskjaer will then be given the full amount of that money to spend on Niguez and it’s claimed the Norwegian is excited by the prospect of pairing the Spaniard with Bruno Fernandes in United’s midfield.

The Portuguese star has made a sensational start to life at Old Trafford but Solskjaer remains keen on strengthening his midfield.

The 47-year-old is interested in Ajax star Donny van de Beek but it’s feared the Dutchman prefers a move to Real Madrid.

Niguez would become one of the highest paid players at Old Trafford but United would have more breathing space with high earner Pogba off the books.
