“But they’ve got to sort that side out, the recruitment is the only thing that’s going to bridge the gap.”

Meanwhile, United legend Paul Scholes admits some recent signings have not been good enough but isn’t sure if a director of football would solve the problems.

“It’s a role that confuses me,” Scholes said.
