Fernandes’ shirt number leaked

Bruno Fernandes will wear number 18 for United, according to a leaked image of the new signing.

Fernandes was announced as a United player on Thursday, though there was no indication given of his shirt number.

However, in an image widely spread on Twitter, it appears that he will take over the number 18 shirt from Ashley Young, who left for Inter Milan earlier this month.

Joshua King bid

Manchester United have failed with a bid to sign Bournemouth striker Joshua King.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to bring in a striker before the deadline following Marcus Rashford’s double stress fracture to his lower back.

The Telegraph claim United’s approach was rebuffed, though, as Cherries boss Eddie Howe wants King to help the side’s bid for survival.

Solskjaer managed King in United’s reserves and remains an admirer of his countryman.

Matic’s approval

Nemanja Matic has given Bruno Fernandes the seal of approval after the Portugal international completed his £67million move to Manchester United on Thursday.

“I know Fernandes,” the Serbian, once of Benfica, told GQ.

“I follow football and I follow the Portuguese league because I played there. He has experience of playing in a good league at a big club.

“He’s also played for the Portuguese national team and I think he will be very important for us.”

Willian Jose

Manchester United have been offered the chance to sign Real Sociedad striker Willian Jose before the deadline.

Tottenham have been linked with the 28-year-old Brazilian, who is rated at £25million.

Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol provided an update on the situation on The Transfer Show.

“This source is also telling me that United could sign him on loan, as well as Spurs,” he said. “He’s a good Brazilian striker, record at Real Zaragoza is good, he scored 46 times in 113 games.

“What’s interesting is that he was pulled from Sociedad’s squad to play Osasuna last night. He’s missed the last three games and with this information that talks are ongoing, it’s beginning to tally.

“I think the stumbling block is that Sociedad want £25m whereas Spurs want a loan deal. But we’re also being told that Manchester United could be an option for him as well.”

Rio offers his backing

Rio Ferdinand has reacted to Manchester United’s capture of Bruno Fernandes on his YouTube channel.

The former United centre-back spoke glowingly of the midfielder, saying: “Are we happy? Yes we are. What does it mean?

“It means goals, it means creativity, it means vision, it means guile, it means assists, it means chances created. That’s what he brings to the table.

“It’s a man who actually beat Frank Lampard’s record in midfield in terms of goalscoring. He did it. He did it at Sporting Lisbon.

“This guy, I’ve seen him do it in a national team shirt for Portugal – he has got the skills to pay the bills.”

Rojo exit

Amid the storm that was Bruno Fernandes’ official unveiling as a Manchester United player, one star left Old Trafford.

Marcos Rojo has joined Estudiantes on loan for the rest of the season, pending international clearance, the club have confirmed.

The Argentine struggled for game-time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this term and will meet up with ex-United midfielder Juan Sebastian Verson once he moves back to his homeland.

Rojo, whose United deal expires in 2021, was pictured in the away end for United’s 1-0 Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg win over Manchester City on Wednesday night.

Shirt number tease

Manchester United have completed the signing of Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon.

And as always, fans want to know just what shirt number Fernandes will be wearing ahead of his likely debut on Saturday.

They may have been given the biggest hint yet, however, from United shirt sleeve sponsor Kohler, who released a video upon Fernandes’ move to the club.

The video shows a United shirt hanging on the wall with his name on the back before cutting away just as a double-digit number is shown.

Fernandes wore No 8 at Sporting but that number is taken by Juan Mata at United.

Captain’s welcome

Harry Maguire has welcomed Bruno Fernandes to Manchester United after the Portuguese star signed a five-and-a-half-year deal at Old Trafford.

The long-awaited transfer finally went through on Thursday after Fernandes completed his medical at Carrington.

United broke the news via Twitter, posting: “#MUFC is delighted to announce the signing of Bruno Fernandes!”

And Red Devils captain Harry Maguire was one of the first people in the mentions to welcome United’s fourth-most expensive signing in history.

“Welcome Bruno,” the former Sheffield United star simply replied, with a raising hands emoji and red dot.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Bruno Fernandes

“We have been tracking Bruno for many months and everyone here has been tremendously impressed with all his attributes and what he will bring to this team,” Solskjaer said.

“Most importantly he is a terrific human being with a great personality and his leadership qualities are clear for all to see.

“Bruno’s goals and assists stats speak for themselves, he will be a fantastic addition to our team and he will help us push on in the second part of the season.

“The winter break is coming at a perfect time for us to integrate Bruno into the squad and for him to get to know his team-mates.”

Bruno Fernandes’ first interview

Bruno Fernandes says Cristiano Ronaldo was influential in his decision to join Manchester United.

The Portuguese was officially unveiled on Thursday, and discussed his reasons for joining the 13-time Premier League champions.

“My love of Manchester United really started when I used to watch Cristiano Ronaldo play and ever since then I have been a big fan of this great club,” Fernandes told the club’s official website.

“For me to now play for Manchester United feels incredible, I have worked hard to get to this moment and I can promise the fans that I will give everything for the badge to help bring us more success and trophies.

“I want to thank Sporting for everything they have done for me. It is surreal to hear the nice words that have been said about me from players that used to play for this team.

“A massive thank you to Ole and everyone at Manchester United for the trust they have shown in me and I can’t wait to start to repay that on the pitch.”

Bruno Fernandes announced

Manchester United have officially announced the signing of Sporting Lisbon star Bruno Fernandes.

The 25-year-old Portuguese international has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract, with the option of a further 12-month extension, in a deal worth an initial £46.6million.

Fernandes will bolster United’s midfield ranks. Solskjaer has been short of numbers in the department since the departures of Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera while injuries to Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay have exacerbated the problems.

Fernandes has a reputation as a goalscoring, attacking midfielder who can operate centrally or out wide. He can also be deployed defensively.

He scored 63 goals and also contributed 52 assists in 137 appearances for Sporting.

Islam Slimani twist

Manchester United are still locked in talks to sign Islam Slimani.

The Algeria international emerged as a surprise short-term option for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in recent days as the United boss looks to bolster his attacking options.

Sky Sport Italia claim the Red Devils and Inter Milan are still talking his agent agent Federico Pastorello about a loan agreement.

However, Antonio Conte’s side look to have edged ahead with journalist Nicolo Schira claiming Pastorello met with Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio at Principe di Savoia today.

Bruno Fernandes signs

Bruno Fernandes has completed his move to Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon in a deal worth up to £67.6million.

Fernandes penned a four-and-a-half-year contract on Thursday after passing his medical at Carrington.

Fernandes’ agent Miguel Pinho was the first to confirm the transfer with a post on Instagram which read: “And finally…”

The 25-year-old midfielder, clad in United training gear, posed alongside his representative with his contract on a table in front of him.

United will pay Sporting an initial £46.6m with a £4.5m in achievable add-ons to come.

Thereafter, United may have to fork out a further £12.6m based on more difficult variables which include Fernandes winning the Ballon d’Or.

Wanted: Salomon Rondon

Manchester United’s search for a striker has taken an unexpected twist.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is eager to bolster his attacking options and wants a striker to follow Bruno Fernandes through the Old Trafford door.

The club have been linked with various options including Krzysztof Piatek, Edinson Cavani, Islam Slimani and Odion Ighalo.

But The Times claim former Newcastle striker Salomon Rondon is being targeted.

The Colombian forward, who followed Rafa Benitez to Chinese Super League club Dalian Yifang for £16.5million, could be available on loan because of the escalation of the coronavirus epidemic.

Edinson Cavani plan

Edinson Cavani has decided to stay at Paris Saint-Germain for the remainder of the campaign.

That’s according to Spanish journalist Jon Hernandez, who claims the Uruguayan forward’s decision has ‘opened the door’ for Chelsea and Manchester United.

Atletico Madrid had been expected to secure his signature before Friday’s deadline, but Cavani’s U-turn means he will be available on a free transfer in June.

Hernandez told talkSPORT: “Could Cavani be coming to London? There’s a chance, definitely.

“He has been linked with Atletico Madrid and Diego Simeone is desperate to get his transfer, but it looks like PSG are going to turn down the last offer from Atletico Madrid.

“He will stay in Paris and that has opened the door to Cavani moving to Chelsea or even Manchester United at the end of the season.”
