Olivier Giroud was close to Inter Milan transfer
Former Italy defender Matteo Materazzi, who was involved in the deal which was meant to take Olivier Giroud to Italy, has opened up on just how close it was.
He said: “Inter were very close. Then there was the problem of Politano and Spinazzola that blocked the situation.
“When Politano was signed by Napoli, Lazio and Tottenham were included in the race for Giroud.
“Lampard vetoed [a move to Lazio]. If you buy a player he must be average or higher, Giroud would have been the ideal purchase.”
Raheem Sterling to Real Madrid update
Manchester City star Raheem Sterling has “told people privately” he wants to play in La Liga and that Real Madrid is “very attractive to him”, claims transfer expert Duncan Castles.
“Raheem Sterling’s just not long signed an improved contract at the club,” Castles said on the Transfer Window podcast.
“Raheem Sterling has told people privately for a long time that he sees himself playing in La Liga at some point in his career and that Real Madrid is a club that is very attractive to him.
“So this is genuine. This is Raheem Sterling signalling to Madrid that he is interested in playing for them and he’s doing it less than a week after Manchester City have been handed a two-year Champions League ban which will have a massive effect on their finances and threatens to take a player like Sterling, who you could easily argue has been one of the top performers in English football, some would argue he’s been the top performer in English football over the course of the last year.
“The threat is that he will not be allowed to play in the top club competition and therefore it’s not surprising to see him putting out statements that would entice Madrid to explore the possibility to get him out of the club this summer.”
Liverpool signing backed
Liverpool have been backed by Alex Bruce to complete the transfer of Todd Cantwell from Norwich in the summer.
He told Football Insider: “One thing that he gives you is his ball carrying.
“He is a little bit like Jack Grealish – that type of player. He plays with flair like a James Maddison.
“Of course, he has some way to go before he is at their levels but it is his first season in the Premier League and he has done OK.
“He has caught people’s eye and everybody is talking about him. Cantwell is young, so he is definitely a prospect.
“It would not surprise me if a club like that takes a punt on him. If Norwich go down, it will be difficult to keep hold of him.”
Liverpool and Man Utd battle
Liverpool have joined the race to sign Birmingham City teenage wonder Jude Bellingham.
The 16-year-old is a top transfer target for Manchester United.
However, the Star say Liverpool are now in the hunt for the playmaker.
It’s claimed United are desperate to land Bellingham ahead of their rivals after being embarrassed in their pursuit of Erling Haaland.
Man Utd £50m bid
Manchester United are ready to launch a bid of £50million to take Wolves frontman Diogo Jota to Old Trafford this summer. United had spies paying particular attention to Portuguese when he netted a hat-trick against Espanyol in the Europa League on Thursday night.
Jota, 23, became the first player in eight years since Schalke’s Klass-Jan Huntelaar to score back-to-back hat-tricks in the Europa League.
United are desperate for someone to take the goal-scoring burden off Marcus Rashford having failed in the last two transfer windows to land a top-class striker.
Jota has spent the three seasons at Molineux having played for Nuno Espirito Santo at Porto and helped the club win a Championship title in his first season.
Timo Werner hints at Liverpool move… again
Timo Werner has revealed he’d fit in at Liverpool, while hailing Jurgen Klopp as the best coach in the world.
The Liverpool transfer target said: “Jurgen Klopp is the best coach in the world.
“There is a lot to suggest that my style of play would suit there (Liverpool).”
Werner hinted he’d be keen to join Liverpool after RB Leipzig’s 1-0 win at Tottenham in the Champions League this week.
Aubameyang Arsenal exit
Inter Milan are plotting a move to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this summer, provided Lautaro Martinez completes his rumoured £92million move to Barcelona. The Arsenal striker is one of five men being watched by Antonio Conte’s side, as well as Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud.
Tuttosport reports that if Inter are forced to sell Martinez, they will look at Aubameyang as a potential replacement.
The talisman is out of contract at the end of next season, and it has been speculated that he will refuse to sign an extension without the chance to play European football.
For that reason, it is possible that the Gunners will look to cash in on their star asset, in order to fund a squad rebuild at the Emirates.
