A Just Giving fundraising page has been set up in his name, raising more than £13,000.
Maria Kane, chief executive of North Middlesex University Hospital, said: “Dr Malinda was a well-loved and valued member of the team. He was a very caring doctor, who was known for his spiritual nature and the compassion he showed to his patients and colleagues.”
Colleagues at the hospital said he always went “beyond the call of duty with kindness and compassion”.
A tribute on the Just Giving page said: “His gentle manner and calm demeanour brought comfort to so many patients and colleagues. He was a dedicated doctor who went above and beyond the call of duty. He will be remembered for his selfless attitude and his eternal optimism.”
Colleagues said that they had treated Dr Dissanayaka, originally from Sri Lanka, in the hospital’s intensive care unit.
Their tribute added: “As colleagues we watched him dedicate so much of his time and effort to treating and comforting patients during this pandemic.”
