Liverpool snap up Stefan Bajcetic in first bit of January transfer business

Liverpool have reportedly signed defender Stefan Bajcetic from Celta Vigo ahead of the January transfer window opening next week.

The 16-year-old centre-half joins the Reds from Celta Vigo, having also been on Manchester United’s radar.

Bajcetic has impressed Liverpool scouts since they first watched him late last year, and they have swooped to beat rivals United to his signature.

He makes the switch to the Premier League champions in a £224,000 deal, while left-back Calum Scanlon joins from Birmingham City for £400,000, according to The Athletic.

The publication claims Liverpool chiefs worked around the clock to secure Bajcetic’s signature before transfer regulations change due to Brexit on January 1.

Their efforts to sign the youngster in time show how highly they regard him. Both Bajcetic and England under-15 defender Scanlon will now be given time to settle in before the coaching staff decide which teams they will join.

Liverpool’s senior defensive ranks could also do with a bit of bolstering when the transfer window opens next week.

Makeshift defender Fabinho was partnered by Nat Phillips for the Reds’ 0-0 draw at Newcastle on Wednesday, with Joel Matip expected to be out for three weeks with an adductor injury.

And Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been linked with a move for Lille defender Sven Botman, with first-choice centre-backs Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez facing a race to return this season following long-term knee injuries.

The Reds are also reported to have landed Calum Scanlon from Birmingham City

According to the Transfer Window Podcast, the Reds have begun discussions over a January swoop for 20-year-old Botman, who has impressed in Ligue 1 this term.
