Liverpool striker Liam Millar has signed a new contract at the club and also made a loan move to Charlton Athletic, heading to the League One side for the rest of the season.

The 21-year-old has made just one senior appearance for the Reds, starting in the 1-0 win over Shrewsbury in the FA Cup last season.

He spent the majority of 2019 on loan at Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership, scoring two goals in 36 appearances across two seasons.

Back at Liverpool, he has scored five goals in 14 appearances for the U23 side this season so far and been one of the form players in the team, wearing the captain’s armband.

He has done enough to earn an extended stay with the Premier League champions, but they see his development accelerating in the League One with the Addicks.

Miller grew up in Canada, moving to the UK to join Fulham at the age of 13, before moving to Liverpool in 2016.

He has picked up eight caps for Canada since making his international debut in 2018.

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer said of his new signing: ‘He’s an exciting player, he wants to travel with the ball and he wants to go past people, that is what we need.

‘It has been obvious, since we lost Alfie [Doughty] to injury, that we’ve lacked that pace to hit teams on the break and Liam is going to bring that to us as an option.’

Miller added: ‘It feels great to be a Charlton player and I’m excited to get going. Charlton is a big club and you can see that just by walking around the stadium, so I’m very excited to be here.

‘I spoke to the manager on the phone, he had very clear goals, stuff that I think I can come here and help with.’

Charlton are currently sixth in League One after defeat to Hull City last time out.
