Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to spring Naby Keita surprise with possible FA Cup return

Jurgen Klopp has sprung a major selection surprise, by suggesting Naby Keita may return from injury in the FA Cup this weekend.

The Liverpool boss revealed that his £53m midfielder will undergo an “intense” training session on Friday, and if he comes through that with no reaction, will be in line to face minnows Shrewsbury.

Klopp is likely to make 11 changes from the side which started against Wolves on Thursday night, and he wants to use to the game to give players returning from injury the chance to find fitness and rhythm.

Keita has been sidelined for three weeks with a groin injury, and has returned to training this week.

His first full session with the squad was on Friday afternoon, and the manager said: “Naby we will have to see. I think from my information is that he will be part of training today, and then we have to see. It isn’t too long (being back) but we will have to see how he looks.

“We have players who are coming back and have come back from injury, so it makes sense to play them because they are pretty good and we want to go through.

“It’s a chance for a lot of players to play a good game. I haven’t made the line-up yet as we have to wait and get all the medical reports.”

Klopp though, did suggest that Takumi Minamino won’t start in the FA Cup, after playing more than an hour at Wolves as a first half replacement for Sadio Mane.

It means he will mix youth and experience, with the starting XI, if Keita is declared fit.
