Laurence Fox at anti-lockdown protest as PM delays ‘freedom day’ for four weeks

aurence Fox joined an anti-lockdown protest outside Downing Street as Boris Johnson’s announced a delay in his roadmap out of covid restrictions.

The group of over 100 demonstrators brandished placards and chanted as the Prime Minister delivered confirmation that so-called ‘freedom day’ when pandemic rules could be scrapped has been delayed for up to four weeks.

Protesters also massed around Parliament earlier in the day to vent their frustration at the stalling of the government’s road map back to fully opening hospitality, major sporting and entertainment and events and dropping social distancing requirements.

Actor and activist Fox, 43, warned that the demonstration was minor compared with what was being lined up for June 26. Filming his protest throughout the afternoon he said the demonstration was “the small one”.

He added: “This is the small one Boris. Still pretty big though … you have no reason to lock us down.”

The former London Mayoral candidate also said the protesters were “normal people wanting their lives back.”

On his defeat for the mayoral office he added “Who cares you’ve got to start somewhere right?”

He tweeted during the protest: “To everyone who has followed every rule, worn the masks, home schooled their kids, lost their businesses, been responsible in every way to help us all get out of this mess, who found today’s announcement to be a massive kick in the teeth. Come and be heard on the 26th in London.”

The protesters were seen hugging in central London, showing their disagreement with the current lockdown measures.

In one image Fox was captured in an embrace with a fellow demonstrator.

June 21 had been pencilled as the date when all Covid restrictions would be lifted, but the PM always said he would be guided by “data” rather than by “dates”.

In recent weeks, the UK has experienced a rising number of the Delta variant, which was first identified in India.
