Kia hopes to breach compact SUV top 3 with Sonet launch


MUMBAI: Korea’s Kia Motors is bullish that Sonet will drive it into the list of top three compact SUV brands in India. Sonet, launched last Friday, has more than 25,000 bookings in less than 3 weeks.

Buyers were already spoilt for choice in India’s 15-brands-strong compact SUV segment. Sonet — at `6.71lakh (ex-showroom) for its base model— will make competition stiffer.

The segment’s top five — Hyundai Venue, Maruti Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport, Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV300 — share 80-90% of market.

Experts said Sonet’s aggressive pricing could set off a price war. Kia is targeting sale of 100,000 units in the first year, said Manohar Bhat, its head of marketing and sales.
