Jurgen Klopp makes Curtis Jones prediction after two-goal display at Lincoln

Jurgen Klopp predicted good times ahead for Curtis Jones after the Liverpool youngster’s quickfire double helped sink Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup.

Jones scored twice in four first-half minutes as Klopp’s side won the third-round clash 7-2 to set up a last-16 showdown against Arsenal.

Takumi Minamino also struck a double after Xherdan Shaqiri’s early free kick had give Liverpool the lead, with Marko Grujic and Divock Origi also on the scoresheet.

But Jones’ performance had his manager purring after the 19-year-old midfielder staked his claim for more first-team action with the Premier League champions.

“First half really good, start of the second half really good,” was Klopp’s assessment of the youngster’s display.

Curtis Jones strokes home his second to put Liverpool four goals up

“There is still space for improvement but everyone knows my opinion of Curtis Jones – he is an exceptional talent and we will have some fun with him I am pretty sure in the future.”

Klopp hailed Jones’ technique after he scored his first from Origi’s header before a slight deflection helped home his second.

“Both goals were difficult,” said the manager. “The second one the first touch was absolutely exceptional between two opponents and then he opens up and sees the opportunity and finishes it off.”

Jones has been given the No17 shirt for this season – the same number legendary Reds skipper Steven Gerrard wore when he was coming up through the ranks at Anfield.

Just like Gerrard in days gone by, Jones gave a tireless midfield performance – but the Liverpudlian insists it is merely by chance he has taken the same shirt number.

“It’s just a coincidence I’m wearing Steven Gerrard’s number 17 shirt this season, it’s more to do with a family thing and growing up and stuff,” Jones told Sky Sports .

Jones became the youngest captain in Liverpool’s history earlier this year when he was handed the armband for the 1-0 FA Cup victory over Shrewsbury.
