Jurgen Klopp claims one team celebrated Liverpool's Super Cup win more than them

Jurgen Klopp joked that the real winners from Liverpool’s Super Cup win were their next Premier League opponents Southampton .

The Reds won their 43rd major honour in the club’s history on Wednesday, beating Chelsea in the final .

But it took them till the early hours of Thursday morning in Istanbul to earn the victory after being taken to extra time and penalties.

Liverpool’s next fixture is a trip to the Saints on Saturday for a 3pm kick off, leaving less than three days to prepare.

Klopp said: “We have to find a way to be ready for that game.

Klopp was in jubilant mood after watching his side win the Super Cup

“After 90 minutes, when it was close to the final whistle and Frank Lampard asked me ‘where do you play and when do you play (next)?’ and I said ‘Saturday at Southampton’!

“Nobody wanted extra time tonight. We will have to be ready again and that’s my present to the players, to be able to help them recover so they are ready for the game.

“Let’s try to find a way to win on Saturday, then we have Arsenal coming up. Both will be incredibly difficult for different reasons.

“Only one team celebrated more than us tonight and that’s probably Southampton when they saw 90 minutes, no decision!”

Mane then looked to have won it in extra time when he struck home off the crossbar, but the lead lasted a matter of minutes.

Blues striker Tammy Abraham went down under very slight contract from Liverpool’s stand-in keeper Adrian, resulting in a penalty – which Jorginho duly dispatched.

The game was then taken to the lottery of a shootout, where all of the first nine penalties were scored before Adrian saved from Abraham to seal Liverpool’s win.

But despite the taxing night on his players, Klopp was pleased to secure another trophy.

“It’s really important [winning the Super Cup]. I didn’t know before the game how big it would feel and I know now it’s big,” Klopp said.

“It’s nice, really nice, but not about me, I am not just saying that – its about doing it for the people. We’ve had four opportunities to do it for them in the last few months and we did two, so that’s good.”
