The announcement comes after the country banned all tourists visiting the country until at least December 13 after going back into lockdown.

All trips from today until December 1 to Austria have now been cancelled by the tour operator.

They said in a statement on the website: “Due to the Austrian government imposing a national lockdown, we have taken the decision to suspend flights and holidays to Vienna up to and including December 1.

“Where customers are affected by any programme changes, we have been repeatedly recognised by independent travel agents for how we have handled this, and all affected trade bookings will be cancelled with a relevant refund.

“For bookings due to travel to Vienna after December 1, we will provide a further update ahead of then.”

Customers with holidays after this are advised not to cancel their trips themselves, as they will not be reimbursed.

If the lockdown extends, Jet2 is likely to cancel more holidays to Austria at a later date.

Covid rates have been rapidly rising in recent weeks as Austria grapples.

The country has one one of the lowest vaccination rates in western Europe – roughly 66 per cent – and among the highest infection rates with a seven-day average of 990.7 per 100,000 people in the past week.

Not only have they banned tourists, but the lockdown means hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions are also closed.

The country’s tourism website said in a statement: “Austria’s borders are open, but given the upcoming lockdown, travel to Austria for touristic purposes will only be possible again after December 13.

“During the lockdown, a curfew is in place in Austria, and all tourist facilities such as hotels, restaurants (only take-away possible), bars, cultural institutions, leisure centres, etc are closed.”

Other countries could go into lockdown and ban tourists just before Christmas too.

German health minister Jens Spahn warned his country could follow Austria and go into a full lockdown in the next few days as they also battle spiralling cases, while the Netherlands is currently battling a number of riots after the country went back into lockdown.
