Japan to charge up electric car subsidies – NHK WORLD

Japan is set to boost subsidies for people buying electric vehicles as it tries to get on the road to a greener future.

The government currently offers EV buyers up to about 4,000 dollars, but NHK has learned the Environment Ministry is planning a new subsidy that could roughly double that.

To get the extra support, drivers must be able to charge their cars with power from renewable sources, such as solar panels at their home.

People in Japan only bought about 20,000 electric cars last year, way below the roughly 1 million vehicles sold annually in China. Japanese sales also trail places such as Germany and France.

The government aims to start the new subsidy by early next year. It will last for a limited time.

Auto-exhaust makes up about 15 percent of Japan’s carbon emissions.
