Jamie Carragher has revealed a damning assessment of Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, saying he is clearly not a good as his rivals at Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea and he never will be.

Solskjaer has had a turbulent start to the season, with some memorable wins but also some damaging defeats as the Red Devils struggle to impose themselves in either the Premier League or Champions League.

After the summer arrivals of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, Manchester United are expected to be challenging for the biggest titles available to them, but they have been far from convincing so far.

Liverpool legend Carragher feels they will always struggle to compete at the highest level under Solskjaer because the Norwegian is simply not as good as Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel.

Carragher even compared the United boss to his own playing days as he looked to bridge a gap in quality to his rivals.

John Terry was taller than me and was always going to be better in the air. Rio Ferdinand was quicker and stronger,’ Carragher wrote in The Telegraph. ‘I maxed out with what I had… but nothing I could do was ever going to supplant the two of them. It’s the same with Solskjaer up against Klopp, Guardiola and Tuchel.

‘He’s never going to be at the level of the three managers he’s got to beat. He’s never going to be them. He’s never going to have that gravitas.

‘He hasn’t got the presence of Klopp at Liverpool, he’s hasn’t got the trophies behind him that Guardiola has at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and now Manchester City so that when he speaks the players hang off his every word.

‘What intensifies the spotlight is Tuchel coming in. Chelsea were where United have been in the last two or three years but they brought in a manager who has taken them up to that Liverpool and City level really quickly.’

Solskjaer has the perfect chance to prove Carragher wrong when Manchester United host Liverpool on Sunday in the Premier League.

However, defeat to the in-form Reds would be United’s third loss of the Premier League campaign already and leave them seven points behind Klopp’s side after just nine games.
