Jack Grealish has played down concerns over his injury problems despite holding ice on his shin after an impressive performance in England’s 1-0 win over Austria on Wednesday night.

The Aston Villa captain has been struggling with a shin injury in recent months, only returning to Premier League action in the final three games of the season.

He started the match at the Riverside Stadium on Wednesday night and turned in an excellent display, playing a part in the only goal of the game, scored by Bukayo Saka.

Grealish was replaced by Ben White with 20 minutes to go and was icing his shin on the bench, causing some concern, but he insists it is all just part of managing the injury he had been suffering.

‘It has been a great few days, announced in the final squad was hard work for all the season and that was my aim,’ Grealish told ITV. ‘I have had an injury recently but to get 70 minutes under my belt is perfect.

‘It’s not shin splints. It was a bit of stress on my shin, a different type of injury but I am not concerned. I still need to keep on top of it and heal it after games that is why I had the ice on.

‘You cannot knock Austria, top players in the Bundesliga and we have seven or eight top, top players to come back. A good test and another win under our belts.’

England boss Gareth Southgate was impressed by the playmaker’s performance, but could see that he is still working to regain full match fitness.

‘He showed some lovely touches he’s still getting to full fitness where he can do those little bursts and get away from players, but he’s a quality player,’ said Southgate.
