A TRAVEL expert has revealed her top five ways to make your holiday much cheaper this year.
From changing the time you fly to when you book your car hire, being savvy could save you hundreds.
Here are the top five tips from founder of Next Vacay Naveen Dittakavi.
- Fly between Tuesday and Thursday
When you choose to fly could save you hundreds of pounds, even if you change date by just a few days.
She said: “When looking for flights, you should avoid flying on weekends.
“Tuesday to Thursday are the better days to fly and you want to avoid flying during peak season, so summer is obviously going to be more expensive around the holidays when the flight prices get bumped up.”
- Book on an airline website rather than a third-party site
While third party websites can sometimes offer cheaper fares, they can make it much harder if you run into any problems such as delayed or cancelled flights.
Naveen explained: “I’d recommend booking through the airline as there is a chance that the airline will go above and beyond for you if you book with them.
“An airline is more likely to have a team to quickly deal with the issue either in-person or via a call service.
“With a third party, it’s likely the best option they could give is to refund you, which isn’t helpful if you’re just looking to get to a destination.
“The airline, on the other hand, will do everything in its power to get you to your destination”.
- Be Destination-Savvy
Even if you are desperate to go to Paris or Venice, you may want to choose a different destination, depending on the time of year.
She explained:“There are many variables that go into what city will be the cheapest place to fly into at any given time – from seasonality to flight time.
“When looking for tickets, you’ll want to keep these things in mind, and if you’re flexible, you can adjust your plans accordingly to make sure you find the cheapest flights anywhere.”
- Book car hires in advance
If you need a car to get around, this is something you will want to do sooner rather than later, with Naveen recommending to do it at least a few weeks before travelling.
She said “With the current demand for travel in recent months, brokers are ramping up prices and leaving travelers paying a steep price for car hire once arriving in their destination.”
- Try to get free perks rather than pay for extra costs, such as airline upgrades
While getting freebies may seem impossible, you could increase your chance of a free upgrade, including flying on quieter days.
Naveen explained: “Flights that depart on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays are the lowest volume business travel days.
“Early morning flights are usually packed with business travelers, so it’s unlikely that you would be able to get a free upgrade here.
“Choosing to fly on national holidays or flights in the middle of the night is your best option as you’ll be able to avoid the business traveler rush who needs to be in the office by 9 am.
“Since these types of flights are usually full of families, you’ll have an even better chance of landing a free upgrade to business class if you’re in a couple or flying solo.”
