IDP launches digital campus in Chennai

CHENNAI: “Our vision is to build a platform that ultimately enables us to bring employers on to connect with students,” IDP Education‘s Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Barkla said at the launch of the International education services provider’s first digital campus in the world on Tuesday in a technology park in Chennai.

IDP looks at connecting students with the right course at the right institution in the right country. Barla said that the company is focused on creating a platform that is a ‘connected community’ where students, counsellors and parents can interact. Eventually, he said the company would be keen to add employers to this community as well.

“We haven’t done that yet (brought employers in) but that data set that we’re building enables students, should they choose to expose their data, to expose their data in terms of their English proficiency, their high school marks, under graduate or post graduate course results. That data is extremely valuable… One of our desires is to get to a point where we can open up, on the back of the student allowing that data to be available, to let employers come in.”

The new campus will see more than 400 digital and technology experts come together will service IDP’s global IELTS network and student services offices across 60 countries. The new digital campus is also home to IDP’s Academy, a talent incubator program that provides emerging digital professionals with an in-house training and development program. Barkla said the Digital Campus cements IDP’s position as a key player in the edu-tech services space in the city.

“The launch of our Digital Campus is a defining moment as we transition from an analogue company to a digital, omni-channel edu-tech organisation,” Barkla said. “We set ourselves a courageous vision to build the world’s leading platform and connected community to guide international students to achieve their study and career goals. The Digital Campus in Chennai will become the engine room that drives our platform innovation and customer-led product design.”

In 2017, IDP acquired The Hotcourses Group, now incorporated into the business as IDP Connect, owners of some of the world’s most popular education websites such as The Complete University Guide, Whatuni and Hotcourses Abroad. IDP is a living network of students, clients, services, alumni and employers.

According to the company’s annual report, 2019, IDP performed very strongly in India during the year with revenue growth of 38%.

“The company’s performance benefited from strong student demand for placement into higher education courses to Australia and Canada and growth in market share of students placed in Australia, Canada and the UK. IDP IELTS volume growth in the second half was impacted by a short-term market share shift to the British Council in the Punjab region of India, and the college exam schedules in India being impacted by the general election. IELTS volume growth in India for the full year were still very strong at 18%,” the report read.
