Google has announced its new news showcase will allow users to read select paywalled articles for no extra charge.
The company says it will pay participating publishers to provide “limited access to paywalled content for News Showcase users.” However, they also noted that users will still need to register directly with that said publisher, which Google claims will “give them away to build relationships.”
Launched in such countries as Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, France, U.K., and Australia, the Google news showcase is essentially a story panel. The panel curate a daily selection of the most important stories of followed publishers. Currently a total of 400 publishers are participating in the showcase program.
