Gareth Southgate revealed he had a ‘long chat’ with Jurgen Klopp in the aftermath of Joe Gomez’s injury on international duty.

The England boss saw the Liverpool centre-back suffer an innocuous injury in training and he now faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

While he avoided damage to his ACL, the tendon injury sustained required an operation and he will miss the next six months of football.

Southgate branded the injury as ‘tragic’ and blamed the congested nature of the footballing calendar.

And he discussed the injury with Klopp – who has also lost fellow centre-half Virgil van Dijk to a long-term issue this season.

‘I think all the managers, I had a long chat with Jurgen last night, we’re all worried about player welfare,’ Southgate said ahead of England’s clash with the Republic of Ireland.

‘To lose a player in the way that we did yesterday, for us and for Liveprool, but most importantly for the boy, is really tragic.

‘I said there needs to be a look at the calendar.

‘We’re fortunate to have the six subs tonight, five for the Nations League. We’ve got to try and lessen the load, as much as we can, for the players.

‘Unfortunately the injury was so unique in how it happened, we know it was just a consequence of the number of games.

‘Wherever he had been, there’s a chance it would have happened.

‘But we [Jurgen Klopp and I] are on the same page, we think the welfare of the players is critical.’

Wright thinks the congested fixture list is a concern (Picture: Gallo Images/Getty)

Arsenal legend Ian Wright said this was a concerning time for footballers amid a congested fixture list.

‘We’re in a period of time where with everything that’s going on in the world with the Covid stuff, we’re trying to cram,’ said Wright.

‘And there’s going to be a consequence to that. It will be the fact players get injured. You feel for the players. Everybody should be concerned for them.’
