Gareth Bale has received plenty of criticism during his time at Real Madrid .
The Welshman came under-fire again last week when his team-mate Marcelo revealed he speaks just four words of Spanish despite moving to the capital from Tottenham way back in 2013.
Bale has failed to pick up the language after six years in Spain and his former Wales manager John Toshack says he should have made more of an effort “out of respect for the fans”.
Toshack, who enjoyed two stints as Real Madrid boss, reckons it is not too late for Bale to rectify things and put in more effort.
“When you move to a foreign team and out of respect for the fans, one needs to make an effort to speak the language in question,” Toshack told Spanish radio show El Transistor .
“Bale needs to make an effort.”
It seems Bale has learned to communicate in other ways, however.
He has been reported to the Spanish FA’s competition committee by La Liga for an obscene gesture to Atletico Madrid fans in their recent local derby which could lead to a ban.
