Frank Lampard raves over ‘exciting’ Thiago Silva after Chelsea debut against Barnsley

Frank Lampard says Thiago Silva’s debut for Chelsea was ‘exciting’ and that the Brazilian will only improve as the season goes on.

The former Paris Saint-Germain captain made his full debut as Chelsea put six past League One side Barnsley at Stamford Bridge to progress to the fourth round of the EFL Cup, where they’ll face either Tottenham or Leyton Orient.

The 35-year-old has waited patiently to make his first appearance for the club and was ruled out of the first two fixtures of the season on account of his lack of match fitness, rather than any underlying issue.

The Brazilian adds experience and knowledge to Chelsea’s leaky defence but many have questioned whether the veteran has the legs to compete in the Premier League, given his age and lack of familiarity with the competition.

Though Chelsea were hardly run ragged by Barnsley, the Yorkshire side put up a good fight in the first half and Silva was tested on plenty of occasions.

‘It is exciting for us because he has had just over a week training with us,’ said Lampard.

‘It was a perfect 60 minutes for him tonight. He will show the qualities he has. Of course, he will get fitter and better. He also gave us something for me on the night in the dressing room and on the pitch of a leader with authority in terms of his demands on others.

‘He can’t speak the language but at the minute that’s not even a problem because his presence and the way he commands people around him is already showing that to me in training and in our game tonight.

‘I am very very pleased with Thiago. It is what I expected of a player of his level but it is very refreshing to have him here at the club.’

The Blues take on West Brom at the Hawthorns this weekend, where they’ll be looking to put their 2-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday behind them.

Silva could be in line to feature given Andreas Christensen is suspsneded following his red card against the Reds.

Lampard will be buoyed by the performance of Kai Havertz, as the German got off the mark for the club by bagging a hat-trick in the win in west London.

Tammy Abraham, Ross Barkley and Olivier Giroud added the other three goals.
