Frank Lampard hailed Liverpool’s Premier League title-winning achievement and has challenged his Chelsea players to bridge the gap next season.

Willian’s late penalty helped the Blues to a 2-1 win over Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night which ultimately saw Liverpool crowned as Premier League champions for the very first time.

The victory also represented a major boost for Chelsea in terms of their hopes of cementing a top four place and securing Champions League qualification.

Lampard, however, has far loftier objectives and with the likes of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech already on their way and the likes of Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz to potentially follow, the future looks exciting for Chelsea.

Lampard acknowledged that Liverpool and City are likely to be the favourites to win next season’s title but is hopeful his emerging side can force their way into contention.

He said: ‘Just congratulate Liverpool. I don’t think this game decided the title. That was decided a long time ago through Liverpool’s consistency, performances and wins. Fair play to them of course. Give them full credit. They deserved to win it. Great for the players. Great manager.

‘I know the hard work that goes in to trying to win a title with the competition that they’ve got. We saw that with Manchester City tonight. Big congrats to them, they deserve it.

‘Of course they will (be a force for several seasons). That’s the Premier League. For the last three seasons themselves and City have been out on their own pretty much. That’s a lot of work, as I say, from Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp. The players they have brought in, the project, how they work. Great coaches they are.

‘They are going to be there but it’s up to us because it’s a gap we want to try and bridge and move up towards. They are two of the best teams in the world. Again, credit to Liverpool for what they have done.’
