Frank Lampard has offered his advice to his Chelsea attackers after the shock Premier League defeat to Southampton.

The Blues were condemned to consecutive home defeats for the first time since 2011 after Southampton clinched a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Goals from Michael Obafemi and Nathan Redmond helped Southampton return to the south coast with the three points and climb to 14th in the Premier League.

Chelsea had fewer shots against Southampton than in any game since Lampard took over in the summer and the manager has offered advice to his forwards.

‘We have to work,’ the Chelsea legend said. ‘Players have to go one versus one if you’re an offensive player.

‘Play it around the corner, mix up your game, break defensive lines, because teams aren’t stupid, they are well organised, we need to do more in an attacking sense.

‘You can’t have nearly 70 per cent possession and control, in particularly the first half, and not do more, not hit better crosses, not hit better final passes, not get clear chances at goal from our point of view.’

Lampard added: ‘Teams are making it difficult here. We are not making enough chances, we were at the beginning of the season.

‘I think we have enough to be better than we were today. It needs to be a quick learning process now.’

Ralph Hassenhuttl, who saw his Southampton team win for the third time in five league games, said: ‘I think we saw the passion from every player on the pitch today.

‘It was maybe the best game of the season. With fixtures coming, we needed to rest players but everyone played a fantastic game.’
