Edu and Arteta 'disagreed' over Arsenal's Partey or Aouar transfer question

Edu got his way in Arsenal’s transfer decision over Thomas Partey or Houssem Aouar, according to French outlet L’Equipe.

They claim that Gunners boss Mikel Arteta would actually have preferred to sign Lyon’s Aouar this summer, but technical director Edu’s decision “obviously had more weight” as Arsenal eventually moved for Ghanaian midfielder Partey.

The 27-year-old joined the Gunners on transfer deadline day earlier this month, and has so far played three times for his new club.

Earlier in the month it had appeared as though Aouar had moved to the front of the queue to be the more likely of the pair to sign for the Gunners, with negotiations taking place with Lyon.

Partey is said to have been Edu’s preferred choice

The Ligue 1 side rejected those approaches though, with the 22-year-old France international instead staying at the club.

That L’Equipe report – highlighted here by Sport Witness – details Lyon’s delight at being able to keep hold of both Aouar and forward Memphis Depay, both of whom scored in the 4-1 win over Monaco on Sunday night.

If Arteta is indeed disappointed at landing Partey and not the France international then he hasn’t shown it, and praised his performance following his first Gunners start in last week’s Europa League win at Rapid Vienna.

Arteta is reported to have preferred to sign Aouar

Mikel Arteta’s Gunners have been starved of title glory for a while now – but things could be changing as a new-look Arsenal side plot a course to success.

“It is about finding the cohesion in the team and the fluidity with and without the ball what we want,” he said in quotes carried in the matchday programme for Sunday’s defeat to Leicester.

“Finding some specificity was in my opinion lacking in the squad, to get the pieces in the right places where everyone is comfortable doing their job that we give them to do. I think we are much more balanced.

“I was really impressed because he looked really confident, he grabbed the game in the most difficult period, he took responsibility, he was really comfortable on the ball, he made a lot of right decisions, he was really strong in the challenges in every transition moment.”
