Edouard Mendy sends blunt message to Petr Cech over chances of playing for Chelsea again

Chelsea star Edouard Mendy has played down the chances of Petr Cech donning his goalkeeping gloves again for the Blues, though he is very grateful to be able to learn from the veteran.

The 38-year-old – who retired over a year ago – was a surprise addition to Chelsea’s Premier League squad list, having been brought in as ‘emergency cover’ in the event that any of their first-team keepers ever needed to isolate.

Frank Lampard described the decision as a ‘no-brainer’, though played down the likelihood of Cech ever seeing game time, and Mendy, likewise, does not expect it to happen.

‘In terms of him playing, I think we already have three very good, competitive goalkeepers and that should be enough for us,’ said Mendy bluntly.

Nevertheless, the Senegalese shot-stopper has been grateful to have Cech involved in training – particularly after it was the Czech who pushed hard for Chelsea to sign him from Rennes.

‘It’s just an absolute pleasure to be with him every day,’ Mendy continued.

‘To work with him and particularly in training it allows me to watch how he works and to analyse his game. So it’s a wonderful bonus for me being here.’

Mendy has displaced Kepa Arrizabalaga – the most expensive goalkeeper in history – as Chelsea’s number one between the sticks, though he says there are no hard feelings and the keepers all get on well.

‘Before my first match, he absolutely wished me good luck,’ Mendy said of Kepa.

‘He never holds back if he thinks he sees things that I might have missed, just as Willy Caballero does as well.

‘It’s great that we have a united team, the three of us, it is good for us and good for the rest of the team.’
