Earthquake rattles just off coast of San Francisco, Marin County – Press-Enterprise

For some Bay Area residents, the final wake-up call of 2020 came courtesy of a small earthquake Thursday morning just outside San Francisco.

A magnitude-3.6 quake struck at about 5:40 a.m. Thursday just off the coastline of San Francisco and Marin County, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, about nine miles below the ground. The quake’s epicenter was about 4.3 miles south of Muir Beach, just west of the Golden Gate, according to the USGS.

Almost immediately, reports of people jolted awake by the quake began to appear on social media, and more than 3,500 people within the first half hour reported feeling the tremors to the USGS website, including reports from as far north as Santa Rosa and south to nearly San Jose.
