Earliest Man City can wrap up Premier League title as Man Utd clash looms

Manchester City are well on course for a third Premier League title triumph after extending their lead to 12 points over the weekend.

City weren’t at their fluent best in their battling win over West Ham on Saturday, but still eked out a 20th straight win in all competitions as their quadruple quest continues.

With Manchester United dropping points at Chelsea, and Leicester losing to Arsenal, it now seems only a mathematical miracle can stop City reclaiming the crown.

Their rivals will be doing their best to stop the title charge, with City hosting second-placed United on Sunday, and travelling to third-placed Leicester next month.

But perfectionist Pep Guardiola will want the deal in the bag as soon as possible, amid hopes his side could then concentrate on targeting that elusive Champions League triumph that has so far proved out of reach With fans speculating on when City could wrap up the title, Mirror Sport looks at the possible scenarios.

Scenario 1 – April 3

City face Leicester on April 3 – and they could claim the title against the Foxes if they win all four games before that.

It’s unlikely, however, as it would require both United and Leicester to lose all their games over the same period.

In that scenario, a win over Brendan Rodgers’ side would leave City 27 points clear with their rivals having 24 left to play for.

Victory in Sunday’s Manchester derby will be crucial to the Blues’ chances of winning the title as soon as possible.

They have three home games coming up, with the derby sandwiched between the visits of Wolves on Tuesday and Southampton on March 10.

City are then away at Fulham on March 13 before their trip to the King Power Stadium.

Scenario 2 – May 1

Pep Guardiola has his eyes on a third Premier League title triumph in four seasons

Of course, City can’t rely on United and Leicester losing all their upcoming games – but they can inflict maximum damage by beating both sides in the next few weeks.

If Guardiola’s side beat Wolves and then win Sunday’s derby, they will be at least 15 points clear of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

If both sides then match each other’s results, City would be 15 points clear with 12 remaining by beating Crystal Palace on May 1.

Scenario 3 –May 8

All City need to do is match United and Leicester’s results.

If they maintain the current 12-point gap, they can secure the title on May 8 when they playing Chelsea, with just nine points available after that game.
