Doddridge High School team places in cooking contest – Parkersburg News



CHARLESTON — A team from Doddridge County High School won second place in a culinary contest sponsored by the West Virginia Department of Education.

The Tasty Gearheads from Doddridge County was among the eight teams in the second annual Culineering Challenge sponsored by the Office of Career Exploration and Student Engagement.

The Kraken Krew from the Mercer County Technical Education Center was named grand champion of the event held at the Mountwest Culinary Arts Center in Huntington. The presentation showcased the applications of science, technology, engineering and mathematics with culinary and hospitality skills.

The first-place team received $5,000. Second-place Doddridge received $3,000 and third-place Baker Bots from Marion County Technical Center received $2,000.

Also, each student on the grand champion team received $200 from by the West Virginia Hospitality and Travel Association and Education Foundation.

Each team consisted of two culinary students, two engineering students and one social media influencer who together designed and built an aquatic robotic vessel they navigated through a pool obstacle course at the Marshall University Aquatic Center. While in the water, teams delivered desserts to a panel of judges.

The social media influencer documented the team’s progress over various platforms.
