Dilip Cherian steps down from the board of Taj GVK Hotels & Resorts

In a surprising development, Dilip Cherian, founder of public relation agency Perfect Relations, has stepped down from the board of Taj GVK Hotels & Resorts, within a week of his appointment as an independent director, said a person familiar with the development. Tata Sons, through Indian Hotels Company (IHCL), owns about 26% in the TajGVK Hotels & Resorts. Currently, Tata Sons and its minority shareholder Shapoorji Pallonji (SP) Group, are fighting a protracted legal battle after Cyrus Mistry, a scion of the SP Group was unceremoniously removed from the company.

Interestingly, Perfect Relations handles SP Group’s public relations account including communications regarding its four-year-old legal battle with Tata Sons. When contacted, Cherian confirmed the development. While TajGVK spokesperson declined to comment. According to TajGVK’s website, the company has currently 7 properties and over 1362 rooms across Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai and Chandigarh.

Last week, on September 10, the TajGVK Hotels had announced in its stock exchange filing that the board of directors have approved the appointment of Cherian as additional director for the company for the term of five years, subject to the approval of the shareholders on 26th Annual General Meeting (AGM), scheduled to be held in the year 2021. In September 2016, Dentsu Aegis Network (DAN) had acquired Perfect Relations, an independent public relations firm founded by Cherian and Pradeep (Bobby) Kewalramani. As per the regulatory filing, both of them are still on the board of the PR firm.
