Dietmar Hamann rates Liverpool summer signings Diogo Jota and Thiago Alcantara

Dietmar Hamann has been impressed with the starts made by Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota and thinks they will prove to be excellent signings for Liverpool.

Hamann, the former Liverpool midfielder, admitted that he didn’t feel Thiago was a necessary signing despite the lack of creativity in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield – largely due to the attacking talent among the wing-backs and front line.

But he believes Thiago adds a new ‘dimension’ to the squad and can carve out chances from the centre of the park like no other current Liverpool midfielder can.

And he compared the former Bayern Munich and Barcelona star to former Red Philippe Coutinho for his ability to unlock defences.

‘He brings another dimension to Liverpool’s midfield because they’ve got very good players, very disciplined and organised but finesse and guile they haven’t really got in midfield and they didn’t need to because they’ve got the best forwards and fantastic full-backs and they get their creativity through them,’ Hamann told TalkSport.

‘With Thiago they’ve got a player who especially when you play against deep, sitting teams he can open defences up a bit similar to Coutinho when he was there. He’s clearly a very good buy for them.’

A few eyebrows were raised when Klopp spent £45million on Wolves forward Jota but Hamann has been impressed by his ‘impressive’ start to life in a Liverpool shirt.

‘He’s scored some very important goals and I think he’s a player who can come in when something happens to the front three,’ added Hamann.

‘It’s very hard to buy somebody who takes their place because they’re probably the best attacking line in world football at the moment.

‘He wasn’t cheap but I think they’ve found a player who can score and set up goals, he’s still very young and I think it’s very promising how he’s started his Liverpool career.’
