Diabetes sufferers have double risk of severe illness or death from Covid-19

Ahead of World Diabetes Day tomorrow, 44 world experts have published a report in the Lancet, saying there are thousands of preventable deaths daily.

Diabetes caused 4.2 million deaths globally in 2019. Around 463 million people have diabetes – including 3.9 million in the UK.

Diabetes reduces life expectancy in middle-aged people by four to 10 years and trebles the risk of death from cancer and cardiovascular and kidney disease.

Health experts seek sustained weight loss in patients carrying an extra 2½ stone.

This can induce remission of Type-2 diabetes for up to two years.
