DEVOTIONAL GUIDE: Who sets your moral compass? – Park Rapids Enterprise

There are many things, ideas, people, experiences and organizations that help us decide what we believe to be right or wrong. There is only one person who actually knows what is right and wrong. He created everything that is, and He has established the standards for all that He created.

This Creator has chosen to reveal Himself to us through His creation, through the prophets that He sent with messages from Him, and through sending His Son Jesus to become one of us and show us what God is like and reveal His plan to us.

The Bible gives us the history of God’s creation and His dealing with humans. The Bible tells us that we were created innocent, but soon chose to rebel against our creator and sin. This rebellion against God has flavored every human that has been born into this world.

That’s where our moral compass got off kilter. That is why so many today call evil things good and good things evil. That is why humans can be so bad and not have any guilt about it. That is why Jesus had to die to take on our sin and offer us salvation through faith in Him.

Putting your faith in Christ is the only way a person can begin to recalibrate his moral compass to line up with God, the one who knows it all.

You see, if your moral compass is determined by your environment and not a witness from God, you have no standard to determine what is right or wrong, good or bad. People then set their standards on many false ideas, and it results in much insecurity, anxiety, stress and many bad consequences.

God said, “Thou shalt not murder.” Because the moral compass God put in the human heart has been stained and crushed by our continued rebellion against our creator, people today keep murdering each other.

Forty-nine years ago, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled it was OK to murder unborn children. Since that day, over 63 million babies have been murdered in the United States before they ever got a chance to take a breath of fresh air. In 2019 the number was 862,320 abortions in the U.S. That averages out to be 1.6 babies killed each minute.

Abortion is the leading cause of death in the world. There are those in power in our country that claim they are trying to save you from COVID, but they want to make unlimited abortion the law of our land. What moral compass are they using?

The Bible says God formed us in our mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13). Science says life begins at conception; it always has said that. There is no truth in trying to say a baby is not a life until it’s born.

Who sets your moral compass? Does the Supreme Court set your compass? Does your political party set your compass? Does some college professor set your compass? Or does God and His revelation set your moral compass?

Some of us who believe that life is a gift from God and should be protected from conception to natural death, are having a march and a rally on Jan. 29 here in Park Rapids. We meet at the Hubbard County courthouse at 11 a.m. and walk around town a bit and end up at St. Peter’s Catholic Church for a rally and a free lunch. We would love to have you join us.

Maybe you would like help to reset your moral compass.

Rev. Paul McKibben is pastor of Grace Community Church in Osage.
