Dele Alli's Tottenham future thrown into fresh doubt with Carabao Cup snub

Dele Alli’s Tottenham future has been thrown into further doubt as Spurs boss Jose Mourinho has omitted him from the matchday squad for tonight’s Carabao Cup fourth-round tie with Chelsea.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the England international has been dropped from the squad for the visit of the Blues, who will take on Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this evening.

Alli has only made two appearances for the north Londoners this season, starting in their 1-0 defeat to Everton and playing in their 3-1 Europa League victory over FK Shkendij.

His latest omission has furthered speculation Spurs are planning to offload him. Shortly after Gareth Bale’s loan move back to the club, it was reported the brass had put the 24-year-old up for sale.

French champions and last season’s beaten Champions League finalists Paris Saint-Germain are understood to be interested in acquiring the former MK Dons man’s services.

“I cannot have three wingers and a number 10 and then no defender. Dele stayed out but probably Tuesday he will play.

“I want a balanced squad. Yes [Alli can be part of a balanced squad], he doesn’t have to be sacrificed.”

Among those who reckon Mourinho should retain Alli’s services is former Arsenal midfielder turned pundit Paul Merson, who told Sky Sports: “Something’s got to happen.

“I’m sure one or two will be out the door.

“The thing with Tottenham, [they have a] new stadium, no fans at the moment being allowed in and then you go and buy one of the most expensive players in the world wages wise, someone’s got to go.

“Tottenham aren’t in that position to keep every player. You’d want to think they won’t be letting Dele Alli go.

“When you can get that lad playing, there’s nobody like him in the team that can gamble from midfield. You’ve just got to get him back to having that confidence.

“But I’m sure someone will be on their way, if they’re not then I’ll be even more shocked.”
