'Death of the steel industry on Tories' watch would be a national scandal'

Thousands of jobs are at risk because of the precarious financial position of Liberty Steel.

Boris Johnson has signalled the Government could throw the company a lifeline.

The Prime Minister now needs to put his money where his mouth is. All options should be considered, from financial support to taking the firm into public ownership.

One of the advantages of Brexit is we are no longer bound by EU state aid rules that prevent governments from assisting industries.

Having led the battle for us to leave the EU, it is incomprehensible Mr Johnson should not want to use this new freedom.

The Mirror has been campaigning to Save Our Steel since 2015

The Government needs a comprehensive plan to help our steel industry thrive and secure the jobs of its skilled workforce.

This is a sector of national strategic importance with the potential of a bright future.

It would be a scandal if it was to die on this government’s watch.

The Government has signalled it is willing to act. We urge them not to delay any longer.

The sooner we bring in a ban on imports, the sooner we protect millions of animals.

Culture cash

Castles, museums and arts venues have been given a Covid cash pot to keep them afloat until lockdown is lifted.

When that moment finally arrives they will need our support more than ever. In the meantime, this extra money is just the ticket.
