David de Gea admits the managerial situation at Manchester United is strange at the moment, but is proud of how his team competed in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The Red Devils picked up their second impressive result in two matches under the caretaker stewardship of Michael Carrick after a 2-0 win at Villarreal on Tuesday.

Jadon Sancho gave United a shock lead as he burst through on goal after a Jorginho mistake five minutes into the second half, only for the Italy international to equalise from the penalty spot 19 minutes later.

The Blues had the better of the match, by far, and Antonio Rudiger missed a golden opportunity to win it at the death, but Manchester United fought hard and showed the kind of spirit that was lacking when they were beaten by Watford last weekend, which led to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking.

Ralf Rangnick is now set to take over from Carrick as interim manager at Old Trafford until the end of the season, and while De Gea admits it is an unusual situation, he is glad that the team are at least showing some fight now.

‘Well it is a bit strange but we are professional players,’ De Gea told Sky Sports.

‘We want to be training properly, playing properly, play under the pressure as well at Manchester United.

‘Let’s see what will happen in the future, but at the moment we are a team, we feel all together fighting for the same things.

‘We were conceding a lot of goals, a lot of chances, we were playing very poor, at least now we are defending well, fighting for every ball, that’s good I’m proud of the team fighting for every ball, that’s the minimum for Manchester United players, but a couple of good results.’

Chelsea stay top of the Premier League table with the draw, but are now just one point clear of Manchester City and two ahead of Liverpool.

Manchester United are eighth in the division, five points off West Ham in fourth place, which they want to achieve.
