Fans and pundits have been falling over themselves to hail Jack Grealish as England’s great hope following the side’s defeat to Belgium – but Danny Mills isn’t convinced and has questioned the widespread praise the midfielder has received.

Gareth Southgate’s men were denied a place in the Nations League finals as first-half goals from Youri Tielemans and Dries Mertens sealed Belgium a 2-0 victory at Leuven’s Den Dreef stadium.

Calls for Grealish to play a central role ahead of next summer’s delayed European Championships have been growing louder after a phenomenal start to the season for Aston Villa’s talisman and he was handed his first competitive start on Sunday evening.

After the match, England head coach Southgate reserved special praise for Grealish’s ‘outstanding’ performance, with Ashley Cole and Jamie Redknapp following suit in the Sky Sports studio.

However, the reaction to Grealish’s display baffled former England defender Mills, who made his feelings very clear in a reply to Stadium Astro‘s Instagram post.

It’s not the first time Mills has hit out at Grealish. Back in September, the ex-Leeds and Manchester City right-back declared that Grealish was ‘not good enough’ to be guaranteed a place in Southgate’s England squad.

‘He might get a little cameo, but I don’t think he’ll play a huge part,’ Mills said after Grealish received his first senior call-up.

‘People keep saying: “Why is he not in the squad?”. Well, he’s not good enough, because if he was good enough, Gareth would have picked him. It’s as simple as that.

‘He might get a cameo, but in what position? It might have to be in the wide forward positions.

‘I don’t think Gareth and the England coaching staff see him as disciplined enough on the pitch to do a job.

‘We’re not talking about Iceland and Denmark, you’re looking when you get to quarter-finals, semi-finals when you’re playing against Germany, Spain and France, can you hold that role?

‘Like Mason Mount, we’ve seen him do it for Chelsea, he can stay in that pocket and sit and do that job very, very well.’

Grealish will be confident of keeping his place in Southgate’s starting XI when England play host to Iceland on Wednesday night.

The Three Lions may be without Jordan Henderson and Ben Chilwell at Wembley, who were both forced off with injuries in Belgium.
