The Portuguese superstar is the all-time record goalscorer at Real Madrid with 450 goals in 438 appearances but he could have made a sensational switch to the Camp Nou
Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus with the player returning to Old Trafford after 12 years away.
It was a remarkable transfer that developed rapidly on Friday following initial interest from Manchester City and a sensational return for the Portuguese superstar has been concluded.
Old Trafford was not always the obvious destination for the 36-year-old after a summer of speculation that the player would be leaving Turin in this window.
The links to City followed speculation that Ronaldo would be making a return to Real Madrid and it was only when Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti quashed such claims publicly that such rumours ended.
Spanish TV channel La Sexta’s El Chiringuito show – which has gained notoriety in the international media this year due to its outlandish reporting and dramatic football coverage – had reported Ronaldo’s return to the Santiago Bernabeu as an exclusive.
That was then rejected by the Real Madrid boss, who claimed that he has all the ‘love and respect’ for Ronaldo, but he has ‘never considered’ an approach to be reunited with him in the Spanish capital.
Ronaldo is the all-time club record goal scorer at Real Madrid, where he netted a barely believable 450 goals in 438 appearances.
Yet a remarkable report from the Catalan press – first outlined by Catalunya Radio and highlighted by Diario Sport – claims that Ronaldo ‘offered himself’ to Madrid’s El Clasico rivals Barcelona via his representatives.
It was claimed by this report that Barca showed no hesitation in rejecting the speculation off hand due to Ronaldo’s association with Madrid and how it would be received at the club.
This contact appears to have been made before the player was subsequently offered to Man City and whilst the report acknowledges that this development appears to be outlandish, it is how their sources describe the course of events.

After all, that Ronaldo was offered to City highlights that there was no room for sentiment with Ronaldo’s past at United when it came to negotiating his future away from Juve.
The Portuguese forward made the switch to Turin from Madrid in the summer of 2018 for a reported fee of £105million, where he has raced to 101 goals across three seasons.
Ronaldo had previously been linked with a move to PSG this summer in the event that the Parisians cash-in on Kylian Mbappe, who is out of contract at the Ligue 1 club next season and whom Real Madrid have a long-standing interest in signing.
