Hoffenheim and Austria star Christoph Baumgartner admits it’s been flattering to see his name linked with Liverpool this summer.

The 21-year-old midfielder notched up six goals and three assists in the Bundesliga last season and his outstanding performances at both club and international level have reportedly caught the attention of Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp.

It’s understood the Reds have identified Baumgartner as a possible long-term replacement for Gini Wijnaldum, with the latter agreeing a deal to join Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

Baumgartner, who is valued at around £20million, would be a versatile addition to Klopp’s squad on Merseyside given he is capable of playing at No.10 or in a deeper role at the heart of the midfield.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Austria’s clash with Ukraine, Baumgartner told reporters he had enjoyed reading rumours of an impending big-money switch to Anfield.

But the talented youngster insisted he was fully ‘focused’ on Austria’s Euro 2020 campaign for the time being, with his side currently sat third in Group C.

‘In this tournament there is not much time to think about rumours like that,’ Baumgartner said.

‘In my career I have already learned that the press will always link you to other clubs.

‘I don’t want to deny that I like hearing some of that but at the moment that’s not a topic at all for me and I am fully focused on the tournament.’

Baumgartner added: ‘It’s part of the job to deal with those kind of rumours, I already have experience with that.

‘It’s better to have those rumours than rumours in other areas.’

Baumgartner has made 71 appearances for Hoffenheim since breaking into the first-team back in 2019.

The Austrian put pen to paper on a new contract at Rhein-Neckar-Arena in March which sees him through to 2025.

Manchester United have previously been linked with Baumgartner but have since dropped their interest and switched their attention to other midfield targets.
