Willy Caballero was called upon to replace the dropped Kepa Arrizabalaga and the goalkeeper helped Chelsea earn a hard-fought 2-0 win over Tottenham on Wednesday night.

Kepa paid the price for his public show of disobedience in the cup final on Sunday, as Maurizio Sarri axed the stopper from his starting line-up.

Sarri was enraged to see Kepa refuse to come off in extra-time and turned to Caballero to take the Spaniard’s place.

In truth Caballero had little to do in the game as Tottenham failed to register a single shot on target.

The Chelsea players spent time acknowledging the Stamford Bridge support at full-time and Caballero clapped the fans with his team-mates.

As Caballero was finally making his way towards the tunnel, several of Chelsea’s staff had waited to congratulate him on his display.

The coaches hugged Caballero in a show of support for their No.2 stopper.

The victory over their local rivals is a major boost to Chelsea, who have struggled under Sarri’s guidance in recent months.

With all the attention on the goalkeeping controversy, Chelsea goalscorer Pedro popped up to put in a man-of-match performance.

Sarri was full of praise for his back-up goalkeeper after the game, but hinted Kepa would soon be restored to the team.

‘Caballero is a good goalkeeper with very great experience and he is a great man and for us is really very important on the pitch and in the dressing room,’ he said.

‘It was the right decision, Kepa made a big mistake. He paid with the club and now the team. Kepa for tomorrow will be with us.

‘I don’t know if the next match he will be with us, but in one of the next two for sure.

‘We cannot kill him. When you are young you make mistakes, but you need to understand.’

Kepa could make his return to the starting line-up on Sunday when Chelsea travel to Craven Cottage to take on Fulham.
