Chelsea hero Marcel Desailly feels his old club need to sign a leader of their attack and have not truly replaced Eden Hazard since he left, although he has been impressed with Thomas Tuchel’s impact since arriving as manager.

The Blues picked up an impressive 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in the away leg of their last 16 tie in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Olivier Giroud scored the only goal of the game with a memorable overhead kick, as the Frenchman was handed a rare start up front alongside Timo Werner.

It was a great goal for Giroud and a great result for Chelsea, but Desailly feels there is still something missing in their forward play and would like to see an addition in the summer.

‘It’s missing an individual player in this team of Chelsea to be the leader of the animation, the offensive side of Chelsea, yes, but I’m pleased,’ Desailly told beIN Sports.

‘You said it [someone like Eden Hazard]. To hold the ball, to step the tempo, to accelerate when it’s time to.

‘Timo is showing a great ability, great skill, great usage of the ball but he needs to grow a little bit more to be that kind of player.

‘The rest collectively, Tuchel has been doing a good job.

‘We knew that they are going to have the possession of the ball, against Atletico or not. Pleased about the choice of Tuchel.’

Chelsea have certainly tried to replace Hazard with the likes of Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech, Werner and Kai Havertz all being brought in, but none have been able to regularly make the impact desired.

The Blues remain unbeaten under their German manager with Tuchel stretching that run to eight games on his Champions League debut with the club.

That record will be seriously tested in the immediate future, with Chelsea’s next five games against Manchester United, Liverpool, Everton, Leeds United and the second leg against Atletico Madrid.
