Centre to seek Supreme Court's nod for Space spectrum allocation

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is likely to seek a clarification from the Supreme Court to determine whether satellite communications spectrum can be allocated without auctions, said an official.

The move, aimed at “avoiding any confrontation”, comes as spectrum allocation to satellite technology players has become a contentious issue. Aspiring space broadband players such as Bharti-backed OneWeb have opposed any move to auction spectrum to be used for satellite communications, while operators like Reliance Jio Infocomm have pushed for such airwaves to be sold to the highest bidder.

“We are looking to move the Supreme Court to seek some clarity on the issue of spectrum allocation to satellite players in line with the 2012 verdict,” a DoT official told ET, adding that the “crucial matter” is being deliberated internally.
