The Labour leader is facing mounting questions over why he has not asked to see the legal advice given to his deputy which she says exonerates her of wrongdoing.

Embattled Ms Rayner is refusing to release the documents surrounding the sale of her former council home where she did not pay capital gains tax.

Attempting to dismiss the saga, Sir Keir said: “Angela Rayner has been asked no end of questions about this. She’s answered them all.

“She said she’s very happy to answer any further questions from the police or from any of the authorities. I don’t need to see the legal advice. My team has seen it.”

A fellow Labour MP even suggested the “mudslinging” directed at Ms Rayner was due to sexism.

But Mr Freeman yesterday warned: “As former director of public prosecutions, Keir Starmer should know better than anyone that these allegations must be robustly investigated. Loyalty should never trump the law.”

Cabinet Minister Mel Stride also said he was “surprised” Sir Keir did not want to see the papers.

He told LBC: “What does surprise and slightly confuse me is the fact that Keir Starmer, as a former Director of Public Prosecutions with a fairly forensic inquiring mind, has not seen fit to ask her to show him this advice so he can come to his own conclusion on it.”
