In-form Bournemouth claimed a third straight victory to stay a point behind leaders Norwich City as two Junior Stanislas goals saw off Nottingham Forest.
David Brooks produced a superb performance for the hosts, setting up the opening goal inside three minutes as he clipped a delightful pass into the path of Stanislas, who chested the ball down and opened the scoring.
Stanislas’ second, shortly after half-time, came from a soft penalty as Jack Colback was adjudged to have brought down Dominic Solanke on the edge of the box.
The defeat was Forest’s second in a row and their third straight away loss without finding the net.
Stanislas’ two goals were his first of the campaign in his ninth appearance and he may feel he should have scored a hat-trick, after seeing a shot magnificently blocked on the line by Scott McKenna late in the first half.
Forest rallied in the closing stages, boosted by the introduction of Anthony Knockaert just after the hour mark, as Ryan Yates headed over the bar from the winger’s cross.
The Reds’ loss was their third in nine games under Chris Hughton’s management and they remain 20th, three points above the drop zone.
Bournemouth appeared more confident on the ball and showed their class at times as they kept pace with leaders Norwich, who held on to win 3-2 at Stoke earlier on Tuesday.
Bournemouth manager Jason Tindall told BBC Radio Solent:
“We spoke about making sure we start the game well because of the disappointing start on the weekend against Reading.
“We knew Nottingham Forest were going to have a lot of bodies behind the ball, sit off and try and make it difficult, we knew had to move the ball quickly and try and create space and we did that.
“I felt we were very comfortable for 60 minutes and then we dropped off the last 30 minutes.
“Some of the football we played for 60 minutes I felt we deserved more goals but we got the two, kept a clean sheet and won the game so I’m delighted with that.”
Nottingham Forest boss Chris Hughton:
“I cannot accuse my players of not putting a shift in and not producing a real effort. We showed plenty of endeavour but I do not think we did ourselves any favours.
“You come knowing what a good side they are and how difficult it is going to be so conceding so early puts you on the back foot.
“But I thought we were always in the game. We recovered well from it and at 1-0 it could have gone either way on the balance of play.
“We pushed and could have got back in the game but once they got the second goal, it made it harder still.”
